Rifaximin is in a class of medications called antibiotics. It works by preventing the bacteria from growing inside the intestine (gut). Rifaximin will not work to treat bloody diarrhea or diarrhea with fever. Rifaximin comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken with or without food three times a day for 3 days. To help you remember to take rifaximin, take it around the same times every day.
